Autera vs Motasoft

The Motasoft alternative
that starts free, with the whole job in your pocket.

Motasoft’s Virtual Garage Manager is a well-established cloud system with a strong online-booking pedigree, used by over a thousand UK garages. It is fairly priced from £55/month with unlimited users, on their MotasoftPay rate, £65 without. Autera’s difference is where you start, what you carry and what you sign: free to try with no demo call, £29 to begin paying, no term or notice period, and native apps that run the whole job rather than a companion for the technician.

Autera is best for garages that want online booking, MOT reminders and the mobile app on one plan with unlimited mechanics.

Motasoft VGM is best for established MOT stations already settled on Motasoft's booking pedigree.

WHY AUTERA

Why UK garages choose Autera

You can try it without asking us

Motasoft advertises no free plan and no trial, so finding out what it is like costs a demo call and a quote. Autera Solo is free forever and takes no card, paid plans roll monthly, and cancelling takes under a minute from billing. Software should keep you by being good in month eleven, not by being hard to leave.

The whole product in the app

VGM’s mobile app is a technician companion; the business runs in the browser. Autera’s native iPhone and Android apps carry everything — jobs, photos, quotes, invoicing, payments — because our most engaged customers run their day from a pocket, not a desk.

Cheaper to start, honest about scale

Autera starts free and Starter is £29 against VGM Essential at £55, and neither product charges per mechanic, so the size of your team does not move the bill. Motasoft’s pricing page opens on £55, £85 and £110 as you add features, their discounted rates for garages that also take MotasoftPay card processing; without it the same three tiers are £65, £95 and £149. Autera Workshop is £79 with health checks and reminders in it, against VGM Complete at £110, the only Motasoft tier that carries vehicle health checks.

Live in 30 minutes

No demo call, no onboarding project: sign up, type a reg, DVLA fills the vehicle, run the first job the same half hour. VGM onboarding is demo-led.

ADAS certificates built in

PAS 1880-compliant ADAS calibration certificates are part of the £79 Workshop plan, technician IMI numbers on every cert. VGM does not advertise ADAS certification.

Respect for a real competitor

VGM’s online booking pedigree and GSF/GroupTyre parts integrations are genuine advantages, and its price is fair: £55 a month with unlimited users if you take MotasoftPay, £65 if you keep your own card processing. If those are your deciding factors, it is a reasonable choice. Autera wins on apps, freedom and the price of finding out.

QUESTIONS

Common questions

Their own site answers that two ways. The pricing page says there is no fixed-term contract and the workshop-management page asks one month’s notice, but the homepage FAQ answers “What are your contract lengths?” with a 12-month contract paid monthly by direct debit, the Techman comparison page lists “12-month contracts” under Motasoft, and the master agreement behind the Terms of service link in their footer ends only at the expiry of a Minimum Term, on ninety days’ written notice. Ask them to confirm in writing which applies to you. Autera has no term and no notice period: the free plan never expires and paid plans cancel any month from billing settings.

VGM is from £55/month with unlimited users, the rate their pricing page opens on and their homepage leads with; it is £65 if you do not take MotasoftPay. Autera is Solo free with one mechanic, Starter £29, Workshop £79 and Multi-Bay £149, with unlimited mechanics and unlimited admin users on every paid plan. Neither of us charges per seat, so headcount is not the deciding number. Starter undercuts VGM Essential either way; once you need Workshop, VGM Essential is £24 a month cheaper at £55, or £14 at £65, and we would rather tell you that than have you discover it. Essential does not carry VHCs or the technician app, which Workshop does.

A technician companion app for health checks and job tasks, yes — the management side runs in the browser. Autera’s native iPhone and Android apps are the full product, not a companion.

Parts and tyre supplier integrations (GSF Car Parts, GroupTyre) and Haynes technical data: genuine advantages today, and all three sit on Autera’s roadmap rather than in the product. Its online-booking system is mature and well-regarded. And VGM Essential undercuts our £79 Workshop plan on headline price, at £65 a month or £55 if you also sign up with MotasoftPay. Worth knowing before you set those two numbers side by side: Haynes data starts on VGM Plus at £95 and health checks on VGM Complete at £149, so the tier that matches Workshop is not the entry one.

Export your customers and vehicles as CSV and Autera’s importer auto-maps common columns in minutes, or send the file to [email protected] and we will load it free. Run the two side by side — Autera costs nothing to try — and let your team pick.
